Quick Facts:

  • An estimated 200,000 Americans have Tourette Syndrome.
  • The symptoms of Tourette Syndrome usually appear before the age of 18.
  • Males are affected three to four times more than females.
  • The first symptoms of Tourette Syndrome are usually facial tics, commonly eye blinking.
  • People with TS sometimes suppress their tics for s short time but the effort is similar to that of holding back a sneeze.
  • Generally TS is diagnosed by observing the symptoms and evaluating family history.
  • For a diagnosis of TS, both motor and phonic tics must be present for one year.
  • Tourette Syndrome is a clinical diagnosis. There is no blood test or other laboratory tests the definitively diagnosis the disorder.

Our goal is to support those who have Tourette Syndrome (TS) and to make TS better understood in society through education.

Mission Statement

 The Tourette Syndrome Association of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing the community with a clearer understanding of individuals with Tourette Syndrome (TS).  We offer resources and referrals to help people and their families cope with the problems that occur with TS.  We raise public awareness and counter media stereotypes about TS. 

 

The goals of the greater Rochester Chapter are:

  • to improve the quality of life of those affected by TS through education, advocacy and awareness
  • to educate our communities about, and further the acceptance of people with, TS
